Ella Mills Kayaking Accident Potomac River US

Following a kayaking accident in the US, a young Irish student passed away. Last Sunday, Dublin native Ella Mills, who was travelling with the Columbia University Whitewater Kayaking Club, died after an accident on the Potomac River close to Washington, DC.

She studied English Studies at Trinity College, which has announced her passing this morning.

After arriving in the US earlier this month, Ms. Mills had just started her dual BA degree at Columbia University. A TCD representative said in a statement that the college community was in mourning.

“The heartbreaking death of Ella Mills, an English Studies student who passed away on September 17, 2023, is being mourned by the Trinity College Dublin community. Ella was enrolled in a dual B.A. curriculum at Columbia University with Trinity, they stated.”

“We are thinking of her family, friends, and classmates during this terrible time.”

Following the event, she has received tributes, including from Columbia University President Minouche Shafik, who said “words cannot express” how devastated she is for her family and friends.

Ms. Mills had just recently started her studies at Columbia University’s School of General Studies when the dean of the school remarked that Ella “had a love for learning, was intellectually curious, and passionate about literature.”

Lisa Rosen-Metsch praised her membership in the theatre and tennis societies and said she was “eager to soak in new ways of looking at literature and viewing the world as a literary scholar.”

“She was an active member of the Trinity College Dublin community as part of the TCD drama society, the DU Players, the TCD Tennis Club, and the Philosophical Society, among many others,” Ms. Rosen-Metsch stated.

Following her passing, Columbia University has announced that it would offer counselling services to assist students, and that a vigil was held on Monday night.
