Lakers Pay Tribute to Kobe Bryant with Special Uniforms and Statue Unveiling

On Thursday, a significant moment in Lakers history will unfold as they unveil a statue of the late Kobe Bryant outside Arena. This memorial, honouring the iconic player who tragically passed away in a 2020 helicopter crash, joins those of other Lakers legends like Abdul-Jabbar, Baylor, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, Jerry West, and broadcaster Chick Hearn.

Kobe-Inspired Uniforms:

To mark the occasion, the Lakers will sport special Black Mamba-inspired uniforms during Thursday’s game against the Denver Nuggets. These uniforms, co-designed by Bryant himself, feature “LA 24” on the belt and display his numbers, 8 and 24, under the flap of each leg of the shorts.

The Lakers shared a sneak peek of the special uniforms on Tuesday, creating anticipation for this heartfelt tribute.

Ceremony Details:

The statue unveiling ceremony kicks off at 3 p.m. PT outside the arena. Fans can witness this tribute in person starting Friday.

Symbolic Date Choice:

Feb. 8 was chosen for the event to honour both Kobe and his late daughter Gianna, who also tragically perished in the crash. Gianna’s youth basketball number was 2, while Kobe’s original Lakers number was 8.
