A store incident was responded to by the Garda Emergency Response Unit and other garda units.

After a “hostage barricade situation” on Wednesday night in a small grocery shop in Ballina, County Mayo, an armed suspect was taken into custody. The suspect was armed with a knife.

According to a report by many news, the Garda Emergency Response Unit and other garda units reacted to reports of an incident in a shop located in Market Square at approximately 7:15 p.m.. During the time when An Garda Sochána was conducting their investigation, the public square was cordoned off.

It is thought that the property in issue held a modest grocery store that specialised in items from eastern Europe and eastern and southeast asian regions.

Although videos claiming to show Garda officers targeting the store where the “hostage barricade situation” appeared to be taking place circulated on social media on Wednesday evening, none of these videos have been independently authenticated.

In one of these videos, seven loud noise can be heard as Garda officers enter the store, and a witness can be heard saying that they are ‘flash bangs’.

“Garda in Ballina responded to reports of a male brandishing a knife in a threatening manner in the Market Square area of Ballina, Co. Mayo this evening Wednesday, September 27 at approximately 6pm,” a spokesperson for the gardai told the Irish Mirror. “Garda in Ballina responded to reports of the individual.”

Upon arriving at the site, Garda officers pursued the man, who was in his mid-30s at the time, where he had barricaded himself within the premises of a business and threatened to hurt himself.” At that very moment, there was not a single other person present in the office building. After that, a hostage-taking situation with a barricade developed.

The situation has been resolved thanks to the efforts of the Garda, who also apprehended the male suspect and transported him to a Garda Station in County Mayo.
