A woman from Singapore was killed and ten other people were injured after a tourist van lost control and fell into a ravine that was six metres deep at Bukit Genting in Penang on the evening of Sunday, September 24.

Tthe Seri Balik Pulau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) received a notification about the road accident at 8.20 p.m. on Sunday, and rescue crews arrived at the scene within 10 minutes of receiving the notification.

On arrival at the location, it was found to be a hilly area where it was impossible for the fire engines to enter.

As a result of this, the firefighters had no choice but to spend 15 minutes climbing the hill while carrying stretchers and other emergency equipment.

According to Bernama, Prenavaran stated that in order to free a female victim who was pinned close to the driver’s seat, fire workers had to use specialised equipment to cut the dashboard and the steering wheel of the van.

Additional information was provided by the chief of police for the South West District, Kamarul Rizal Jenal. He disclosed that there were a total of 11 victims involved, eight of whom were women, and three of whom were men.

The driver of the van was a local native, while ten of the passengers were Singaporean tourists who were visiting the country.

Although the identities of the victims have not been confirmed at this time, it is thought that they were senior citizens who were on vacation in Penang.

An autopsy on the woman who passed away is going to take place on Monday, and the authorities are continuing their investigation into what caused the accident.
