Lt. Erika Aklufi stated, in an interview with The Times that took place before the man was brought into prison, that authorities were attempting to pull riders from the Ferris wheel while they communicated with the man to “try to get him to come down.” Ultimately, the man was taken into jail.

Aklufi stated that “out of an abundance of caution,” “we’re going to act as if he does [have a bomb] until we can prove that he doesn’t.” A video showed the firefighters removing riders from the Ferris wheel using a lift.

Around 4:45 in the afternoon, the Santa Monica police department announced on their website that they had not found any bombs: “The suspect is in custody and will be transported to a local hospital for evaluation,” the police added.

After “guest and employee evacuation procedures were initiated due to an unknown individual in a restricted area at the Ferris wheel,” a park spokesperson named Cameron Andrews said in a statement that the pier and Pacific Park have “reopened to visitors upon receiving an all-clear status” from the police.

This was said in a statement that was released on Monday evening. The park expressed gratitude to the authorities “for their prompt response, direction, and leadership.”
