Melbourne CBD Driver Arrested Car crash Bourke Street Accident

In Melbourne’s Central Business District (CBD), a car hit people at a tram stop and then crashed into two other cars. One person was killed and five others were hurt.

The driver of a white Toyota sedan that hit three people on Bourke Street near Swanston Street and then hit two other cars near the corner of Bourke and Russell streets around 6:20 pm on Friday was taken into custody.

Two people, an Uber driver and his passenger in a grey Mazda SUV were taken to the hospital. Victoria Police Superintendent Zorka Dunstan mentioned that the driver of a white Hyundai that was hit by the vehicle was killed.

The 26 year old Melton West male was promptly taken into custody, according to Dunstan, who was speaking to reporters at the site.

She stated that while authorities were aware of the man, there was “nothing to suggest any links to terrorism.” He was receiving a mental health evaluation while in detention.

Before police took him down and arrested him, the man was sitting on the Toyota’s roof, police dragged him down from the roof and arrested him quickly.

The Toyota struck three pedestrians, who were all brought to a hospital. Dunstan expressed gratitude to onlookers for rushing to aid the injured. She mentioned, “We are really appreciative to everyone who provided support.

Before police came, a woman who recorded the attack’s aftermath saw the man sitting on top of the car. Before the man was detained, the woman, who wished to remain unnamed, claimed that furious people spat on him.

An ambulance Victoria said that one of the injured people was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious condition, two people were taken to the Alfred hospital in a stable condition, and a fourth person was taken to St. Vincent’s in a stable condition.

Police shut down Bourke Street from Swanston Street to Exhibition Street, and most stores decided to close.

VicTraffic said that because of the accident, the intersection of Bourke and Russell streets was closed in both ways. People going through the city were told to avoid the area and use Exhibition, Collins, or Lonsdale streets instead.

Several people were present at the scene, including uniformed officers who by coincidence happened to be close by. Just about everyone was stunned.

Mohammed Khadem, a nearby worker, claimed he heard a loud crash and left his business to see police removing a man from the white car’s roof.

Other Bourke Street workers mentioned that the screaming was heard closer to Swanston Street, where the pedestrians were struck.
